Tips and Tricks - Quantities and Preservation

Here are some tips and tricks from the BYU Wellness Newsletter from April 2009.

Quantity for One Month for One Adult and Product
25 pounds - wheat, white rice, corn, other grains
5 pounds - dry beans
30 gallons - water (1/8 tsp or 8 drops bleach for every gallon of water to purify)
*Based on recommendations from Provident Living

To Preserve Your Food Storage Keep it Away From:
Humidity (moisture)
Air (Oxygen)
LightTemperature (Heat)

Tips and Tricks - Powdered Milk

Hi everyone!

My cousin told me about 2 brands of powdered milk that she thought tasted great! She said the taste was comparable to regular 1% milk you would buy from the grocery store.

Recipe - Vegetarian Taco Soup

What You'll Need
2 cans of chili beans
1 can of black beans
1 can mexican tomatos
1 cup salsa
1 small can of corn
1 pack taco seasoning mix
(optional items can include: 1 pound hamburger, 1 onion, cheddar cheese, sour cream, chips)

What You'll Need to Do
Pour all ingredients in a pot
StirSimmer on a medium/low heat for 20 minutes
(For your optional items, brown the hamburger and onion and add them to other ingredients in the pot and top with cheese, sour cream, and chips)

Tips and Tricks for food storage where I'll talk about...you guessed it...Tips and Tricks of food storage. =) And the other type of entry will be Recipes. Start small. Buy a few extra cans a week when you go grocery shopping. Before you know it you'll have a great collection.
